James Larry Guthrie
PORTAGE — James Larry Guthrie, age 78, of Portage, passed away on May 22, 2026, at his home.
Jim was born on September 4, 1947, in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the son of Eugene “Bubby” and Joyce (Roznos) Guthrie. He graduated from Baraboo High School in 1965 and attended Madison Area Technical College for a degree in Drafting. Jim moved to Denver and worked for Diamond Homes as an architect until his retirement after 30 years. He was “old school” and hand drew all of his plan sets for million-dollar homes. Jim amassed a large circle of friends while living in Denver. After returning to the Portage area, Jim met and married his soulmate, Gloria Kirking; she passed away in October 2005. Jim loved to golf and was a stockholder and long-time member of the Portage Country Club and proudly won a C Flight Championship. He enjoyed playing pool-league with his mom, in Oxford. Jim was a good ole boy. A good family friend, Pody, said it best “Jim was a man of endless one liners and self-professed best putter at Portage [Country Club] who never met a free vodka he didn’t like.” His best one liner was “I don’t care what Bill says, you’re ‘ok’ in my book.”
Jim is survived by his siblings: Bill Guthrie (Vicki Vogts), of Portage, WI; Linda (Lynda) Guthrie of Baraboo, WI; Joe (Jennifer) Guthrie, of Baraboo, WI; Steve (Barb) Guthrie, of Marshfield, WI; and many other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Joan (Guthrie) Miller; and a sister-in- law, Anita Guthrie.
Per Jim’s wishes, there will be no services.
The family would like to give a special thanks to his Swan Lake neighborhood who kept an eye on him.
