Ross "Mike" Michael Bennett
PORTAGE – Ross Michael Bennett, age 93, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, in Portage, Wisconsin, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born on August 12, 1932, in Portage to Helen and Ross Bennett.
Mike graduated from Portage High School with the Class of 1950. At 18 years old, he began working for the Milwaukee Road Railroad as a fireman and later as an engineer, all while pursuing his education at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. His dedication to learning led him to earn a Master’s degree in Media Education.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Mike had a deep passion for curling, a sport he enjoyed for 56 years at both national and international levels. In later years, he and his beloved wife, Sis, cherished their winters in Florida, where Mike spent many happy days golfing and enjoying the company of dear friends. Summers always brought him back home to Wisconsin, a place he loved deeply.
Mike was a devoted fan of Wisconsin sports, faithfully supporting the Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Wisconsin Badgers. In Portage, he treasured time with friends, especially during lively games of euchre.
Mike and Sis were active and dedicated members of their community. Together, they volunteered with the Lions Club and Meals on Wheels, and Mike was a longtime member of Portage Presbyterian Church. He was also a proud Mason. After retiring from CESA 12, Mike embraced his love of travel, exploring the world whenever he was not in Wisconsin or Florida.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn “Sis” Bennett; his five children: Pamela Repking (David), Ross Bennett, Michael Bennett, John Selbach (Laura), and Susan Selbach (Chuck Thompson); and his brother, Brian Bennett. He was a proud and loving grandfather to nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and he also leaves behind a cherished niece and nephews.
Mike found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren — playing games, sharing laughter, and attending their sporting events. These moments were among his most treasured.
He will be remembered for his kindness, his warm spirit, and his wonderful sense of humor. Mike was a natural jokester who brought smiles to those around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Helen Bennett, and his brother, David Bennett.
Visitation will be held at Portage Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 11, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Reverend David Hankins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Portage Food Pantry or Portage Presbyterian Church.
