Marie L. Bartels

PORTAGE – Marie L. Bartels, age 98, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, surrounded by her loving family.

Marie was born on November 20, 1927, in Portage, the daughter of Albert and Verna (Pfuehler) Fredrick.
She was united in marriage to Wilbur Bartels, who preceded her in death.  Marie had worked at City Bank & Trust in Portage for many years.  She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Marie enjoyed bowling, sewing and loved to garden.

She is survived by her two daughters, Elaine Schehr and her children, Kelly (Roman) Krueger and Jeremy (Lynette) Schehr and sons, Nicholas (Grace) and Kolbe Schehr, and Carol (William) Lester and their son, Shannon (Rebecca) Lester;  her great- grandchildren, Joshua (Jessica) Krueger, Jennifer (Brian) Kabele, Emily (Lindsey) Thornton, Audrey, Parker, Graham and Cooper Lester;  her great-great-grandchildren, Bowdyn, Audalyn, Emberlyn and Keelyn Krueger, Payton, McKenna, and Rilynn Kabele, and Dawsyn Thornton.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wilbur and her sister, Lucille Schmidt.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Greg Hovland officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the church.
