Michael “Mike” Edward Lord
PORTAGE - Michael “Mike” Edward Lord, age 84, of Portage, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on Monday September 30, 2024.
Mike, the eldest of twelve children was born in Muscoda, Wisconsin to W. Harold Lord and G. Mary (Bock) on October 17, 1939. Following high school in Richland Center he proudly served in the U.S. Navy, and then began his career at Ray-O-Vac in Madison, Wisconsin, where he met the love of his life, Marieta McKernan. They married in 1962 and welcomed their children, Maureen Lord Mohr, Michael Lord, Marc Lord, and Marvin Lord, later settling in Portage. Mike’s strong work ethic, leadership, and organizational skills were forged being “Number One” in a large, loving, and often loud group of siblings. In addition to being a respected manager at Ray-O-Vac for 39 years, he coached basketball and football at St. Mary school. Mike was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion, and a volunteer at Second Harvest and St. Mary Cemetery.
An avid outdoorsman, Mike loved fishing, hunting and camping and instilled this love of nature in others. Sharing fish and venison with friends and family brought him great joy. Kind with understated humor his actions spoke volumes. Recipients of his famous chocolate chip cookies know Mike’s smile always accompanied this coveted gift. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and was adored by his wife, children and grandson, Ryan Mohr.
Mike is survived by his wife, children, and grandson; siblings Jane (Arthur) Grunden; Samuel (Dora) Lord; Kathleen (Rick) Simmons; Susan Miller; and Barbara (Mark) Eggleston; sisters-in- law Shari Lord; Kay Lord; Marlene Frabasilio; Bonnie (Ron) Frabasilio; Sharon McKernan; Theresa Leavitt, and Mischelle Reiners; brothers-in-law James Riddle; Dennis (Carol) McKernan; Richard (Virginia) McKernan; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Michael was preceded in death by his parents; son, Marc Lord; son-in-law, Patrick Mohr; mother-in-law, Frances McKernan; brothers William Lord; Donald Lord; and Peter Lord; sisters, Mary Hewuse; Jean Reiners; Patricia Riddle; and brothers-in-law Francis Hewuse; Kin Miller; John Reiners; Dave McKernan; and Timothy McKernan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2024, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 307 W. Cook Street, Portage with Fr. Randy Timmerman presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. prior to mass. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery with Military Honors provided by Portage Area Veterans Honor Guard.
