Narcisa P. Schmidt

PORTAGE – Narcisa P. Schmidt, age 87, of Portage, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 9, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.

Narcisa was born on March 20, 1936, in Philippines, the daughter of Maximino and Felipa (Tangalin) Pulanco. Narcisa graduated from the School of Nursing in Philippine Union College in 1959.  Six months later, she was called by the Far Eastern Division to be a Missionary Nurse in Saigon, Vietnam, and she readily accepted the Mission call in July of 1960.  Narcisa was now working at the Saigon Adventist Hospital with other Filipino nurses.  Some of their patients were American young men from the International Voluntary Services, and one of them was Don Schmidt.  Don had hepatitis and was cared for by the nurses.  Soon a friendship developed.  When her contract was finished in July of 1964, she decided to move to St. Paul, Minnesota, where a relative lived.  After two years in the United States, Narcisa went to Penang, Malaysia.  After years of friendship, Don decided to look for Narcisa, and followed her to Penang.  Later she worked in London and then flew to India to follow Don, where his international job was stationed.  They married in India.  Narcisa had worked for Divine Savior Hospital as night supervisor for many years.  She was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church.

She is survived by her niece, Margarita Huff, and her children, Neil Van (Shirleen) Gange and Narcy Gange; her nephews, Reynaldo (Teresita) Estabillo, and their children, Aubrey and Steven Estabillo; Larry (Ruby) Estabillo, and their children, Mikhael and Vince Estabillo; David (Teresa) Estabillo; her first cousins, Denis, Evangeline, Rimando, Liling and Ester Pulanco; special friend, Dr. Susan (Edwin) Pineda; best friends, Rachel Biron and Molly; special friends, Alan (Medy) Apo and Lydia DeGuzman; other relatives and many friends.
