James K. Axness

PORTAGE – James K. “Jim” Axness, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Portage on Thursday, August 5, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was born on June 13, 1940 in Arcadia, Wisconsin, the son of Carl and Mabel (Moe) Axness.  He married Anna Mae Marie Stanley on June 7, 1963 in River Falls.  Jim attended school at Oakdale Elementary, Arcadia High School and River Falls State College.  He was the Farmers Home Administration Supervisor for Columbia County.  Jim loved gardening overall, but he especially took great pride in his flowers.  He was an avid Wisconsin sports fan, watching the Packers, Badgers, Brewers, and his childhood favorite, the Braves.  Jim loved his old Western shows like Gunsmoke.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae Axness of Portage;  four children, Roxanne (Tim) Hertel, Curtis (Denise) Axness, Timothy (Kristy) Axness, and Julie (Jake) Carr;  six grandchildren;  three great-grandchildren;  two brothers, Carl “Butch” (Lucy) Axness and David (Bev) Axness;  many nieces, nephews, other relatives and good friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Private family burial will be held at a later date in Fagernes Lutheran Cemetery in rural Blair, Wisconsin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace Hospice Foundation, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.
