Michael G. Mael

Lewiston Township - Michael G. Mael closed his eyes on this home on Sunday, August 27, 2017.

Mike was born on November 12, 1968, in Portage, the youngest son of Gerald and Joyce (Dreyer) Mael. He graduated college from Concordia with a bachelor's degree. After college Mike worked alongside his dad and brother Tom in construction for many years in Wisconsin, Colorado and Nevada. After this Tom and Mike ventured back home to open an archery range, sports bar restaurant called Sharpshooters.

Michael's family was very important to him and there is nothing he wouldn't do for them at any time. His friends became family. Outside of work he managed to have time for his family and friends.  He had many hobbies and interests, from playing volleyball, to coaching youth basketball, auctions, movies, cooking, music, hunting, fishing, celebrations and just hanging out.  Mike may or may not have had a little competitive nature to him when it came to sports, especially his love for football.  Mike had the most infectious smile and unique laugh that warmed the heart.  Animals and kids loved him, he gained inspiration and joy from them.

Michael had an unbelievable faith that was nurtured from St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage where he was a member.  God Speed beautiful soul, may you be free until we meet again, for now we will all live for you here.

Mike is survived by his father, Gerald Mael of Lewiston Township; siblings, Tom (Christine) Mael, Steven (Kathy) Mael, and Catherine Mael, all of Portage; nieces and nephews, Nichole (Dustin) Mackanos of Val Paraiso, IN, Jamie (Chris) Unbehaun of LaValle, Katelyn (fiancé Ben Poppy) Mael of Portage, Austin Mael of Madison, Logan Mael of Portage; great-nephew, Zander; great-niece, Avery; other relatives and many friends. He was reunited with his mother, Joyce Mael, and his daughter, Rachel Yonkers Mael.

Funeral services will be held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Greg Hovland officiating. Inurnment at Silver Lake Cemetery will follow the service. Visitation will be at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage on Friday, September 1, 2017, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. As Mike was a sports enthusiast, please feel free to come dressed in your favorite football attire.
