Doris Rosamond Hoffman (Ahrens)

PORTAGE  --  Doris Rosamond Hoffman (Ahrens) of Portage, WI, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2017 at the Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena.

Doris was born on January 29, 1927 in Princeton, to Irmgard and Herman J.F. Ahrens, the youngest of four siblings, Fred, Harold and Lucille, all who have preceded her in death.  Doris was the valedictorian of her high school class in 1945, and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she majored in Home Economics.  She met her future husband, Robert “Bob” Hoffman at a Lawrence Welk dance in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union on the UW Campus.  Doris and Bob were married on August 29, 1948.  A favorite activity of theirs was doing crossword puzzles which Doris continued to do well into her eighties.  They were blessed with five children, 8 grandchildren and 9 great-children with another expected in January.

Doris’s passion was sewing, which she did with beauty and care.  She shared her love for her children and grandchildren with the things she sewed for them.  She had a deep faith in God and was very active in St John’s Lutheran Church in Portage.  She was a member of the choir, taught Sunday school for many years, taught the Bethel Bible Series, was a member of LWML, Altar Guild, and served on numerous committees over the years.  She was an active member of several Bible classes and for many years made the baptismal napkins for the church.  She delivered Meals on Wheels in the community.  She worked for the Social Security Administration in Portage for over 20 years until her retirement.   

Doris is survived by her daughters, Heidi (Eugene) Thompson, Ruth (Ken) Chvojicek, Sue (Bill) Amend;  her son, Jeff (Kelley) Hoffman; her grandchildren Cory (Spring) Thompson, Kevin (Sarah) Thompson, Brian (Jessica) Thompson, Jennifer Chvojicek, Ben (Melissa) Chvojicek, Heather Hoffman, Alex Amend (Tasha), and Michael Amend (April); her great grandchildren Mikayla and Bodie Thompson, Payton Thompson, Gavin and Colin Thompson, Maya Oganezov and Eva Chvojicek, and Robert and Andrew Chvojicek, with a sister expected in January, other relatives and many friends.  Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bob in 1996, and her son David in 2008.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, August 25, 2017, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, with Rev. Greg Hovland officiating.  Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Oak Grove Cemetery, in Portage.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon on Friday at the church.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
