Susan J. Maurer

PORTAGE  --  Susan J. Maurer, age 70, of Portage, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2016 at her home.

Susan was born on August 7, 1945 in Portage, the daughter of Warren and Laverne (Lindsay) York.  She graduated from Portage High School in 1963 and attended nursing school in Kenosha.  Susan was married on May 15, 1965 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage to Josef Maurer.  She had worked at Divine Savior Hospital and for Dr. Joseph Pavelsek.  Susan then worked for Portage Public Schools until retiring in 2010.  She had a great love for her children, grandchildren, and great grandson, as well as all the children at school.  Susan was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage, the Thursday Bridge Group and the Fraternal Order of the Turtles.

She is survived by her husband, Joe;  her children, Joe (Dara) Maurer, Mt. Horeb, Warren (Jennifer) Maurer, Columbus, and Kathy (Scott) Knapton, Fairbanks, AK;  her grandchildren, Joe and Zoe Maurer, Audrey (Nick Smith) Martinovich, Neil and Wyatt Barhite, Paige and Meghan Maurer, Hailey, Briar and Molly Knapton;  her great-grandson, Xavier Martinovich;  her sister, Judy (Don) Watzke, Oregon, WI;  her extended family, Jim (Terri) Amend, Tom Amend, Tim (Dawn) Amend, Dan Amend, Joanne (John) Van Wie, Pam Amend, Peg Amend, and their families;  other near relatives and many close friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her father’s second wife, Jane, and extended family, BJ II, BJ III, Bill Amend, and Sue Amend.                   

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Portage, with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl presiding.  Inurnment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Portage.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN  38105-1942.
