Alice Mary Dinegan

Briggsville – Alice Mary Dinegan, 90, of Briggsville, passed away on October 18, 2016, in Portage, Wisconsin.

She was born July 14, 1926, to Joseph H. and Mary "Mae” (Gibson) Dinegan at the family farm on 4th Drive and Hwy 23, between Endeavor and Briggsville. Her great-grandparents, who were Irish immigrants, were early settlers of Briggsville. Alice Mary was always proud of her Irish heritage.

She attended Douglas Center Grade School, and graduated from Portage High School in 1943. As a new graduate, she was hired as a teller at the First National Bank (Now Associated) in Portage. There she stayed for 49 years, retiring in December of 1992. Alice Mary was the first female officer elected in the history of the bank.

Alice Mary was a very active member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Briggsville, serving for many years as a trustee, treasurer of the Ladies Altar Society, and in other capacities as needed. She was also a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Carl E. Grabman Post 329 in Briggsville.

Alice Mary will be remembered for her sparkling wit, with eyes and laugh to match. Her customers at the bank will remember her for those things, too, in addition to the kindness, patience and professionalism she always showed them. She loved gardening and traveling, exploring many places in the UK, Canada and USA; some of those trips are lovingly remembered by the nephews and nieces she took along.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Joseph C. Dinegan and an infant brother. She is survived by her 5 nephews and 2 nieces: James of Briggsville, Mary (Dennis) Lueck of Waunakee, Margaret (Maurice) Gurgel of Reedsburg, Joseph T. (Dawn) of Oxford, William (Lucy) of Burlington, John of Ripon, and Thomas (Kari) of Windsor. She also leaves 7 grandnephews, 4 grandnieces, 3 great-grandnephews, 1 great-grandniece, many cousins and friends.

Visitation will take place at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage on Monday, October 24, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary being said at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Briggsville, with the Rev. Ray Dischler presiding. Burial will be at St. Mary Help of Christians Cemetery in Briggsville. Visitation will also be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Our House and St. Croix Hospice who took good care of her in her last years.
