Mamie Anna (Roscoe) York

PORTAGE  -- Mamie Anna (Roscoe) York, age 92, died peacefully on Friday, October 30, 2015 at Golden Living-Continental Manor.

Mamie was born on July 12, 1923, in Elkton, Brookings County, South Dakota, the daughter of Harvey and Edith (Wiese) Roscoe.  She moved with her family to Madison when she was 2 years old, where she grew up.  She was united in marriage to Curtis K. York on June 27, 1942.  While her husband served in the army overseas she lived in Cudahy with her mother.  When he returned from the war, she and Curtis lived on the family farm in Poynette where they raised four daughters and a son.  Mamie loved her family.  She enjoyed writing poetry, short stories and songs.  Her children remember her singing them to sleep many nights.  She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and taking her grandchildren fishing and on trips.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and truly enjoyed visiting with friends and family.  She loved the “Big Band” era songs.

Mamie later moved to Portage after she and Curtis divorced in 1970.  They remained friends the rest of their lives.  Mamie’s sweet smile was commented on by the staff of the nursing home and she shared that smile with all who visited her.  Mom appreciated spiritual things and loved reading the bible.  She was baptized in February 1974 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the Kingdom Hall in Portage until her health declined.  She will be deeply missed by those who loved her dearly.

Mamie is survived by her sister, Christine Thiessen, of Poynette; her children, Barbara (Daniel) Smith, Gail York-Fiese, Linda (Glen) Dettman, Elaine Bruns, and Curtis M. York.  She is further survived by her grandchildren, Dan (Deb) Smith, Liz Falk, Joe (Stacy) Smith, Kirk (Jenny) Smith, Gina (Chris) Balthazor, Kelly (David) Hess, Tyler (Vicki) York, Rhonda (Jaren) Parchem, Jenny and Dee Bruns and Mallerie (Travis) York; her great-grandchildren, Cody Falk, Joshua, Spencer, Konnor, Saylor, Bode, Quintin and Haily Smith, Ryan and Logan Balthazor, Tony and Ryan York, and Devin Hess, many nieces and nephews, and good friends.  Mamie was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Elaine Coleman, her brothers, Frederic, Ray and Curtis Roscoe, her ex-husband, Curtis K. York, her son-in-law, Ron Bruns, her grandson Trenton Fiese, and her great-granddaughter, Cassidy York.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with Phil Woodward officiating.  Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and thanks to the CNA’s, nurses, and staff at Tivoli, Agrace HospiceCare and Golden Living-Continental Manor.  A special thanks to her doctors at Golden Living-Continental Manor and Agrace HospiceCare at Fitchburg for their care of our mom.
