Charles R. "Charlie" Platt

BARABOO/PORTAGE  --  Charles R. “Charlie” Platt, age 82, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 2, 2015 at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo. 

Charlie was born May 5, 1933, Wisconsin Dells, the son of Martin and Laida (Soma) Platt.  He was baptized on September 10, 1933, and confirmed on June 8, 1947.  Charlie graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in 1951.  On April 28, 1956 he married Carol J. Kearley at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells; they had 5 children.  Charlie worked for GTE/Verizon Telephone for 42 years. Charlie and Carol were foster parents for 30 years.  He was devoted to his faith and was a longtime member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage.  Charlie was a member of the Portage Boat Club.  He was a Packer and Brewer fan.  He enjoyed reading, camping, traveling and playing cards, but most of all, spending time with his family.     

Survivors include his wife, Carol Jean Platt; his children, Charlene (Melvin) Goffard, Teresa Roth, Timothy (Sonia) Platt, and Greg Platt; his grandchildren, Matthew Goffard, Jennifer (Spencer) Hill, Thomas Roth, Katherine (Eric) McCutchan, Ashlee Platt, and Ali (fiance’ Alex Wetley) Platt; his great-grandchildren, Autumn, Madison and Ethan Hill; his siblings, Marie Hammerly, Marvin Platt, Kathleen (Phillip) Margetts; his sister-in-law, Mary Platt, other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Laida Platt, his infant daughter, Sherri Ann Platt, his son-in-law, Paul Roth, his brothers, Duane Platt and Martin Platt, Jr., his brother-in-law, Verdine Hammerly, his sisters-in-law, Nancy Platt and Donna Platt, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Vergne and Alma Kearley.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, with Rev. Greg Hovland officiating.  Private inurnment will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, or the American Diabetes Foundation.
