Maureen Mejia

PORTAGE  --  Maureen Mejia died peacefully surrounded by her friends and family at her Goose Lake home on Wednesday, October 7, 2015.

Maureen was born to Ambrose Igo and Adeline Mabel McLaughlin on July 31, 1936.  She was the youngest of seven children, with older siblings Adeline, Theresa, Ambrose, Virginia, Helen and John.  Maureen graduated from Quincy High School in Massachusetts, where she was a Drum Majorette for the Marching Band and was active in the Bagpipe Drill Team, French Club, and Future Nurses.  She fulfilled her dream of becoming a Nurse when she graduated from Cambridge City Hospital School of Nursing in 1958.

Maureen met the Love of her Life, Bert, while she was working as a nurse and he was working as a doctor in the Boston area.  They were married on June 4, 1960.  They briefly resided overseas in the Philippines and in several different states; during these early years their four children, Tom, Jane, Ray, and Chris were born.  The family eventually settled in Wisconsin where Bert was employed in a private medical practice, while Maureen raised the children and maintained their family homes.

Maureen took great joy in raising her four children and instilled in them an appreciation for those things in life that she enjoyed, including beautiful art, flowers, and music.  Maureen had a very outgoing personality and was quick to start a friendly conversation.  Throughout her life, she remained active in the Catholic Churches, St. Ann’s, St. Mary’s, and St. Mary of the Lake.

She is survived by her husband, Bert; her children, Tom, Jane, Ray, and Chris; and her grandchildren, Mia and Trenton; other relatives and many close friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Brooks, Wisconsin, with Fr. James McNamee presiding.  Burial will follow in St. Ann Catholic Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2015 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Lodi Good Samaritan Center, Dean Health, Agrace HospiceCare, and especially Julie and Gemma of Angels Loving Care, for their loving care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Lake, Westport, St. Ann Parish, Brooks, WI, or Lodi Good Samaritan Employee Relations.
