Carole Cleary

PORTAGE  --  Carole Cleary, age 75,  passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at St. Clare Hospice House with her family by her side.

Carole was born May 8, 1940 in Adams County, the daughter of Harold and Ida Stormoen Ashworth. She was employed with the City of Portage as an Administrative Assistant for 29 years. During those years, Carole became known as “Mrs. C” and enjoyed the contact she had with several engineering firms, contractors, assessing companies, namely Accurate Appraisals and being able to assist the citizens of Portage with local government information. Carole enjoyed the numerous tasks assigned to her from the Treasurer and Public Works Departments and formed lasting friendships with all those colleagues. She was especially honored to work under the efficient and professional leadership of Jeff Grothman and Dick (Vinny) Smith during their terms in office on the council and as Mayors of the City of Portage. Carole was a member of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Portage.

Carole’s greatest joy was her four grandchildren and took great pride in the many academic, music, dance and athletic achievements they excelled in. She was a faithful caregiver to her husband, Joe, for many years during his extended illness. Her wisdom, strength, humor and positive attitude will be missed by family and friends.

Carole is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Kurt) Eley of Waunakee and Peggy Maurer of Portage; four grandchildren, Chelsey (Matt O’Brien) and A.J. Eley of Waunakee, Joey and Zoe Maurer of Portage; one brother, Harold (Dorothy) Ashworth of Anaheim, California and one sister, Patty (Dennis) Jameson of Baraboo; nieces, nephews and numerous close friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband and best friend, Joe; a son David Joseph; her parents and step-sister, Dorothy Comstock.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Portage, with Father Gary Krahenbuhl presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Portage. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the Church. The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home is assisting the family.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Chris Lindner of Home Health United Hospice and the staff at St. Clare Hospice House in Baraboo for their professional care of our Mom and Grandma.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Carole’s name to the Joe Cleary Memorial Athletic Scholarship.

Carole will always be remembered as a caring wife to Joe, a loving mom to Patty and Peggy and a devoted Grandma to Chelsey, Matt, AJ, Joey and Zoe.

Rest in peace, Grandma. Give our love to Papa.
