Robert L. “Bob” Hamele

PORTAGE – Robert L. “Bob” Hamele, age 83, of Portage, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Divine Savior Healthcare Hospital.

Bob was born on November 19, 1929 in the Township of Lewiston, in the house in which he was currently living.  His parents were Leonard and Ruth (Rose) Hamele.  Bob served his country with the U.S. Army of occupation in Germany.  He was married on May 28, 1953, to Nathalie Allen.  Bob worked for John Ahl Plastering and was a master plasterer.  Then, upon the formation of a traffic unit with the Columbia County Sheriff, he was a patrol officer, reaching the rank of Captain of Detectives.  Bob then worked for the State of Wisconsin, leading the newly created Capitol Police Force, until his retirement.  After retirement, he attended the School of Auctioneers in Kansas. Bob then joined his brother, Larry, at Hamele Auction Service. His political career included terms on the Portage City Council and the Columbia County Board. His hobbies included hunting, with some trips out West. Bob was an active member of the Portage United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nathalie;  two children, Kent Allen (Deborah) Hamele, Brooklyn, WI, and Luanne Ruth (James John) Napoli, Alexandria, VA;  a granddaughter, Erica Rose Hamele, Madison;  six brothers and sisters, William (Jean) Hamele, Portage, June (Robert) Miller, Portage, Jeannette (Edwin) Zagzebski, Schofield, Joyce (Charles) Sheets, Aqua Dulce, CA, Larry Hamele, Briggsville, and Kenneth (Lynn) Hamele, Omaha, NE; other near relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Warren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Portage United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Countryman officiating.  Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, with military graveside services provided by Portage area veterans.  Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2013 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and at the church on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portage United Methodist Church.
