June Stetina

OCONOMOWOC/PORTAGE – June Stetina, 86, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 27, 2013 with her daughter by her side at her home in Oconomowoc, WI.

June’s family invites everyone to a visitation which will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portage, WI on Monday, February 4 beginning at 11:00am, followed by a brief memorial service at 1:00pm. Burial will be private at Silver Lake Cemetery, Portage.

June Rose was born April 12, 1926, in West Allis, WI to Michael and Leona Rose Waligorski. Following high school, June worked at Allis Chalmers as a key punch operator and became a pen pal with Bill Stetina who was serving in the Marine Corp. When he returned home they met and the rest is history. June and Bill were married on October 25, 1947.  Bill started a dairy business in Portage in 1961, bringing her to Portage to live and raise their three children. Although a reluctant city girl, she eventually fell in love with small town Portage and it became her home for the next 49 years. June was a homemaker, involved in local organizations, and was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church during her years in Portage.  Later in life June worked at various retail jobs and also earned her Certified Nursing Assistant degree. She was an avid golfer, bowler and curler and loved travelling, baseball, listening to polka music and playing cards, especially sheepshead and bridge. She would be happy to take your money anytime and she usually did. In 2010, June moved to Oconomowoc to be near family, but her heart always remained in Portage.

She dearly loved her children and grandchildren who will remember her infectious giggle and sly grin. She will be missed for her spunkiness and spirit.

June is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Susan) Stetina of Overland Park, Kansas, and Craig (Marla) Stetina of Seattle, WA; her daughter Jacalyn (Steve) Stetina Kerr of Hartland, WI; six grandchildren; her brothers Florian and Eugene Waligorski, both of Milwaukee, WI and her sister Shirley Devine of Murfreesboro TN; many nieces and nephews and close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in April of 2002.

June’s family would like to thank both the Heritage House (Portage) and Lake Country Landing (Oconomowoc) assisted living facilities for taking loving care of June over the last five years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in June’s name to the National Kidney Foundation or St Mary’s Church of Portage.

Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
