Helen A. McCartan

MADISON – Helen A. McCartan (nee Lovesy), age 92, of Madison, formerly of Portage, died peacefully on Friday, January 25, 2013, at her home in Madison. 

Helen was born in Briggsville, on April 17, 1920, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Hanson) Lovesy, and throughout her life she loved returning there and had loving memories of her childhood.  She lived in Portage all of her adult life and she was very involved in community organizations; Civic League and Golden Gossips being favorites.  In later years she enjoyed playing bridge with her dear friends, Betty and Elinor.  She loved politics and was proud to be a lifelong Democrat.             

Helen is survived by her children, Mariann (John) Bertram, Madison, John Charles (Laurel) McCartan, Batavia, IL, and Nancy McCartan, Madison; her grandson, John C. (Megan) McCartan, Plano, IL, other relatives and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John Charles McCartan, and her sister Eva Lovesy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage with Rev. Alan Boeck officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and on Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
