Charlotte E. Blau

PORTAGE/RIPON  --  Charlotte E. Blau, age 83, died on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at the Ripon Medical Center in Ripon. 

Charlotte was born on April 5, 1930, in Madison, the daughter of James Smith and Evelyn Mullins (Walter) Koch.  She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.  Charlotte loved people, and liked to laugh!  She was a collector of all kinds of treasures.  Charlotte loved to bake, and she enjoyed gardening.  She loved all the holidays, especially Halloween.  Charlotte especially enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making them cookies and treats, and sending them home sweeter than when they arrived. 

She is survived by her sons, Bob (Cindy) Blau, Portage, and Tom Blau, Edgerton; her daughters, Cathy (Randy) Balliet, Appleton, Janet (John) DiGuiseppi, Rockford, IL, Linda Cramer, Anna Maria Island, FL, and Connie (Bruce) Lamprech, Onalaska; her son-in-law, Steve (Linda) Krejchik, Portage;  eleven grandchildren;  fourteen great-grandchildren and one on the way;  one great-great-grandchild;  her sisters, Nancy Gunderson, Gloria (Nelvin) Olson, Sharon (Dick) Jewell, and Deena Koch;  her brother-in-law, George Weber;  her sisters-in-law, Sophie Smith and Shirley Koch;  her special friend, Esther Staudenmayer, Portage;  other relatives and many friends.  Charlotte was preceded in death by her father, James Smith, her mother, Evelyn Koch, her step-dad, Walter Koch, her daughter, Susan Krejchik in 2010, her sisters, Claudine (Ray) Caflisch and Mary Weber, and her brothers, Phillip Smith, Jimmy (Arlene) Smith, Donny (Millie) Smith, and Tom Koch.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Portage, with Fr. Jim Murphy presiding.  Burial will follow in Shanks Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage.

Charlotte’s Potato Chip Cookies
1 cup butter
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
Cream well and add:
3 ½ to 4 cups flour
2 – 10 cent packages of potato chips (Ruffles)
(slightly crushed)  (1 cup/3 ½ oz.)
1 teaspoon Watkins vanilla
Mix well;  drop by teaspoon and flatten with fork.
Bake in 350 degree oven;  ten to twelve minutes
or until lightly brown.  Makes 8 dozen cookies.
