Donovan “Bud” Squires

POYNETTE  --  Donovan “Bud” Squires, age 74, of Poynette, passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 with his two favorite girls at his side, his wife, Joan and daughter, Rhonda Doherty.

Bud was born on February 13, 1939 in Minnesota to Albert and Lillian (Payne) Squires. Due to his parents’ occupation as cheese makers, Bud attended 13 different schools in 12 years, which brought him to Poynette.  There he met and married Joan (Ross) on April 4, 1959. They were blessed with a daughter, Rhonda, on March 13, 1961.

Bud retired five years ago from many years in different levels of truck driving.  He loved to ride horses and at one time owned several quarter horses that raced at several Southern and Midwest racetracks.  Bud also had a vision for remodeling and renovated many of the homes he and Joan lived in.  However, anyone who knew Bud, knew he was happiest with his music, both playing and singing.  He started out playing Rock n’ Roll and transitioned to Country/Western playing with Lyle Stone and finally, in his own band, Bud Squires and The Night Life for 30 years.  He even traveled to Nashville in 1978 to record a single, “You Can Cry On Someone Else’s Shoulder”, which received play on many local stations.

The other great loves of his life were his grandsons, Jared and Brandyn Doherty.  Whatever the boys were into, Bud was there to support them;  from learning to ride a horse, playing football and rodeoing.  He was very proud of Jared and Brandyn and honored to be their Grandpa.

Bud is survived by his wife, Joan (Ross); daughter Rhonda (Jeff) Doherty of Rio; grandsons, Jared Doherty of Douglas, WY and Brandyn Doherty of Green River, WY.  In addition to his family and friends, his best little four-legged buddy, Clipper, will miss him terribly too.  He is also survived by 34 nieces and nephews, their families and many long time friends. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Lillian, brothers Eskel, Leland, Gerald, Shirlee, and Francis, and sisters, Geraldine, Wanda, and Genevieve, and 2 nieces.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Poynette, with Rev. Strickert officiating. Inurnment will be private. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
