Maxine E. Smith

PORTAGE –  Maxine E. Smith, age 96, died on Monday, February 6, 2012 at Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena.

Maxine was born on November 26, 1915 in Portage, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Evans) Wanderer.  She was married to Harlan Smith on June 6, 1936 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage.  When they celebrated 70 years of marriage they still giggled like newlyweds.  Harlan and Maxine built many good relationships with close friends.  Over the years, they traveled with friends to the Rose Bowl, Cubs games, Badger football games, and countless Portage Warrior athletic events.  Maxine was an avid bridge player, a member of the Portage Country Club and St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.       

Maxine is survived by one niece, Mary Kumlin; two nephews, Robert (Donna) Townsend and DeWayne (Patricia) Riley, other relatives and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harlan, an infant son, Jimmy, who was born and died on January 8, 1942, her brother, Carlton Wanderer, and her sisters, Mabel Riley, Florence Townsend, and Irene Jowett.  

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, with Rev. Alan Boeck officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
