George T. Williams

PORTAGE –  George T. Williams, age 92, of Portage, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Tivoli in Portage.

George was born on June 28, 1918 in Portage, to Arthur and Anna (Thurler) Williams, the middle child of seven boys.  He grew up on a farm near Portage, then moved to the state of Oregon.  George graduated from high school there.  He worked on wheat and potato farms;  was an acrobat pilot, where he was nick-named “The Bald Eagle”;  and was a contracted certified pipe-welder.  George worked for the Highland Hall Company (now H & H Industries), and the State of Wisconsin.  He was married on August 14, 1993 to Marjorie Weyh.  George was associated with the Odd Fellows, the Grange (a farmers organization), was a member of Local 375 Steamfitters Union for over 50 years, and a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Portage, where he was on the council for six years.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie;  three children, Dennis Williams, Wylie, Texas, Norma Dreyer, Windsor, Colorado, and Shirley (Roger) Kulbus, Poynette;  five step-children, Eldon (Donna) Weyh, Portage, Veryle (Noel) Weyh, Belfair, Washington, Arlys Weyh, Portage, Jeanne (Jim) Brinks, Morrisonville, and Darwin (Michelle) Weyh, St. Clair Shores, Michigan;  23 grandchildren;  40 great-grandchildren;  four great-great-grandchildren;  his sister-in-law, Maureen Williams;  other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Doris Williams and Margaret Hawley, six brothers, and his first wife, Susan Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 503 Prospect Ave., Portage, with the Rev. Tom Countryman officiating.  Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.
