William R. Monthey

APPLETON/PORTAGE –William R. Monthey, age 89, a life-long resident of Portage, died on Sunday, September 25, 2011, in Appleton, Wisconsin. 

Bill was born in Marcellon Township on November 11, 1921, the son of George and Lura (Killoran) Monthey.  He married the former Veronica Janda on December 14, 1942 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portage.  Bill served his country in the Army Air Corps.  Joining in October of 1942, he served in the South Pacific and was discharged in October 1945.  He worked for the Milwaukee Road Railroad as a fireman and an engineer.  Bill worked for the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department from 1952 until 1955.  In 1955 he was a member of the first graduating class of the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy.  After 21 years with the State Patrol, Bill ran for Columbia County Sheriff in 1976, and served four years in that office.  Before retiring, he worked for five years for Purolator Courier.  Bill was a member of the Dr. C.W. Henney Knights of Columbus Council No. 1637 for over 50 years, the Father Bourgmeyer Fourth Degree General Assembly No. 1198, and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Portage.  

Bill is survived by his wife, Veronica Monthey; his nieces, Gale A. (Charles) Janda-Maney, Appleton, and Mary (Stephen) Miller, Waupaca; his sisters, Norma Bush, Portage, and Mary (Chuck) Bush, Cheyenne, Wyoming; his brother Harold Monthey, Phoenix, AZ; many great, and great-great nieces and nephews, the Cleary family, other relatives and many dear friends.  Bill was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Bernard, Don, Maurice, and Owen, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Julius and Marjorie Janda.  

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage, with Fr. Jim Murphy presiding.  Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Portage, with Military Honors by Portage area veterans.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
