Jeanne M. Huebner Luther

PORTAGE – Jeanne M. Huebner Luther, age 90, of Portage, passed away on October 28, 2011 after suffering for a number of years with Alzheimer’s. 

She was born on October 5, 1921 to Keith “Scoop” Smith and Ruth Dayton Smith of Portage.  Jeanne was united in marriage to Paul Edward Huebner at St. Mary Rectory in Portage on October 13, 1937, and together they had four daughters, Helen Mary, Jeanne, Ruth Ann and Paula and a son, Paul.  Her husband Paul died of colon cancer in April of 1977.  On May 13, 1978, Jeanne married Keith Luther at St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage.  He preceded her in death on October 16, 2001.

Jeanne worked at the Portage Hosiery and Weyenberg Shoe Factory in Portage for many years.  After her retirement, Jeanne was active in volunteer work with the Wyocena Elder Nutrition site and Portage’s Meals on Wheels.  She was Past President of Portage Credit Union, a charter member of Portage Elkettes #675, a member of WauBun Chapter D.A.R., and the Portage, Wyocena and Briggsville senior citizens clubs. 

Jeanne is survived by her daughters, Jeanne (Ken) Graves, Portage and Ruth (Jay) Anderson, Baraboo;  her son, Paul (Judy) Huebner, Portage;  a son-in-law, Phil (Joan) Traxler, Marshfield;  a brother-in-law, Pat Cline, LaCrosse;  a sister-in-law, Pat Smith, Milwaukee;  13 grandchildren;  30 great-grandchildren;  10 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as both of her mothers- and fathers-in-law, her daughters, Helen Mary and Paula, her grandson, Derek John Huebner, her great-granddaughter, Jillian Mae Kelley, her sisters, Beverly Sewell and Ruth Alice Cline, and her brothers, Keith and James Smith.

Jeanne was a wonderful Mother and Grandmother.  She enjoyed having fun, playing cards, and she had many good friends.  She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage, with Fr. Jim Murphy presiding.  Inurnment will be in Silver Lake Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank the staff of Divine Savior Hospital, Alzheimer’s Unit, Nursing Home, and Hospice for their exceptional care. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to Alzheimer’s, Home Health Hospice, or St. Mary Catholic Church or School.
