John Melvin "Mel" Johnson

BRIGGSVILLE/ENDEAVOR – John Melvin Johnson, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. 

Mel was born on May 20, 1934 in the home on the family farm in the Township of Douglas, the son of John and Mildred (Butterfield) Johnson.  It was in this same home that Mel passed away.  He married Marie Nemitz on June 16, 1961.  Mel was a farmer.  He also enjoyed woodworking, taking vacations, camping, gardening, flowers, birds, and hunting in the woods, and loved to read old westerns.  Mel was a member of Briggsville United Methodist Church.     

Mel is survived by his wife, Marie Johnson; his son, Kenneth (Lori) Johnson; a daughter, Sharon Johnson; two granddaughters, Kassie and Autumn; and a grandson, Ethan, all of Endeavor; two sisters, Ruby Meyer, Middleton, Grace (Tunes) Thalacker, Harrisville; a sister-in-law, Beth Johnson, Montello, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  Mel was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mildred Johnson, an infant grandson, Caleb, a brother Robert Johnson, a brother-in-law, Carl Meyer, and in-laws, Helen and Ervin Nemitz. 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Briggsville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Barbara Bolz officiating.  Burial will follow in Briggsville Protestant Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and on Saturday, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Marquette County Budda Box, St. Mary’s Hospital, or United Methodist Hospitals Ministry.
