Clarence A. “Clem” Evans

PORTAGE –   Clarence A. “Clem” Evans, age 89, of Portage, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2011 at Heritage House.

He was born on December 8, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Ralph and Nellie (Mitkus) Evans.  Clem served his country with the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.  He was a very active member of Cleary-Krech VFW Post #1707, Portage and the Richard Mulcahy American Legion Post #47, Portage;  where he was a member of the Honor Guard and Rifle Detail.  Clem was married to Ruth Ramsay in 1987.  He worked as a technologist for the Bell Telephone Company.  Clem spent the last part of his life at the Heritage House.  He enjoyed going to all the meetings and dinners at the VFW Hall, and playing cards with his veteran friends.  Clem was a member of Caledonia Presbyterian Church.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Ruth Ramsay Evans, Portage;  his children, Sue (Dave) Nelson, Shell Lake, WI, and Russ Evans, Shoreview, MN;  his step-children, Renee Ramsay (James Reynolds), Franklin, NC, and James (Diane) Ramsay, Merrimac;  his grandchildren, Nicole Thompson, Rice Lake, Nathan Thompson, Rice Lake, Erin (John) Scherbert, Merrimac, and Jason (Cassie) Ramsay, Eden Prairie, MN;  four great-grandchildren, Gavin, Taylor, Bryce, and Elda;  his brother, Ralph Evans;  other near relatives and many close friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Lois Jean Evans, and son, Scott Evans.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 12, 2011 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with the Rev. Paula Bremer officiating.  Military Honors will be provided by Portage area veterans.  Inurnment will be in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, at a later date.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Heritage House, and the many friends who took the time to visit him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VFW or the Caledonia Presbyterian Church.
