Doris Irene Crawford

PORTAGE –  Doris Irene Crawford, age 86, of Portage, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2011, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on April 26, 1925 to Nels Christian and Ingeborg Jacobson of Rio, and grew up in a family with strong ties to their native Norway.  Doris was united in marriage to John Gray in Briggsville on September 18, 1946, and together they had a daughter, Judith Marie.  John died of MS on September 18, 1951.  On February 28, 1953, Doris married Edward Crawford, and together they had a daughter, Rita.  Ed had two sons, Ralph and Dale from his previous marriage to Doris’ sister, Alice, who had passed away from cancer on February 8, 1950.  Doris was a wonderful mother, blending all the children into one strong family.  She was the heart and soul of the family, and the glue who held them all together.  Doris enjoyed doing volunteer work with Meals-on-Wheels, The Grapevine, and helping to put together the newsletter, The Chimes, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  She always honored her Norwegian heritage.

Doris is survived by her daughters, Judith (Paul) Huebner and Rita (Arthur) Briant, both of Portage, and her son, Dale (Frances) Crawford, of Fort Collins, Colorado;  her grandchildren, Angela, Vickie, Amy, Troy, Nicki, Brandi, Rebecca, Melissa, Matthew, and several great-grandchildren.  She is further survived by her sister, Valborg Kvalheim of DeForest;  her sisters-in-law, Alice Henke, Florence Coleman, Larryne Crawford, Doris Domstrich, all of Portage;  her brother-in-law, Donald (Joyce) Crawford, of Pardeeville;  many nieces, nephews, and special friends.  Doris was preceded in death by her parents, as well as both of her mothers- and fathers-in-law, her son, Ralph, her grandson, Derek John Huebner, her brothers, Bernard, Oscar, Ingvald, Carl “Jake”, and Ruberg, and her sisters, Alva Sandin, Alice Crawford, and Gladys Fosmark.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Portage, with the Rev. Dick Inglett officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 25, 2011 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and on Tuesday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Home Health United Hospice or Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
