Monard R. Mittlesteadt

PORTAGE  -- Monard R. Mittlesteadt, age 72, of the Township of Caledonia, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, January 5, 2010.  His loving wife and family were by his side at the William S. Middleton Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Monard was born on July 23, 1937 in Reedsburg, Wisconsin.  Monie was the third of six children born to Levi and Theo Mittlesteadt.  The family of his three brothers and two sisters spent their growing up years living in the Sauk County area.  In 1955, he graduated from Prairie du Sac High School.  He was united in marriage to Shirley Kabele on June 25, 1960 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he has been a member.  Two sons blessed their marriage.

Monie began his working years fixing televisions after high school.  He joined the Army National Guard and was a member of the 32nd Division, Portage unit, which was called to active duty in October, 1961, because of the Berlin Crisis.  He was a fixture in the grocery retail business in Portage, working at Piggly Wiggly and Eagle.  Later he worked at Pierces in Fox Lake and Baraboo, and Sauk County Co-op in Baraboo.  He also worked at Burnstad’s Corner Shop and Jim’s 66/Amoco Convenience Store.  After retirement, he became a part time caretaker of the Silver Lake Cemetery.  Monie was a member of the Richard Mulcahy American Legion Post #47, Portage.

Hunting, fishing or mowing his own grass were past times he loved.  “The boys” enjoyed watching baseball, football or NASCAR on TV up in Tim’s “shed”.  Along with Shirley, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, snowmobiling, and dancing.  He loved taking his dog for a daily run while he drove the 4-wheeler.

Monie is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife of 49 ½ years, Shirley of Portage;  his beloved sons, Tom (Rocki) of Schaumburg, IL, and Tim (Noelle) of Portage.  He was the proud grandpa of Matthew of Schaumburg, and Andrew and Allison of Portage, and faithful pal, his dog, “Hermie”.  He is also survived by brothers, Marvin (Merna) of Wonewoc and Maynard (Mary) of Portage;  his sister-in-law, Betty Mittlesteadt of Reedsburg;  his sisters, Monica (Jim) Wagner and Myrna (Jerry) Williams, both of Reedsburg.  This special “Uncle” is survived by many nieces, nephews, and good friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Theo Mittlesteadt and a brother, Martin Mittlesteadt.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, with the Rev. Alan Boeck and the Rev. Jeffrey Teeple officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, with military graveside services provided by Portage area veterans.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at both U.W. Hospital and Veterans Hospital.  Also, thanks to Shirley’s sister, Donna Kutz, who made it possible for Shirley to be able to visit daily with Monie for the past two months.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran School or an organization of your choice.
