Curtis Murray Humphrey

TOWNSHIP OF PACIFIC/PORTAGE – Curtis Murray Humphrey, age 88, died peacefully at his home on Swan Lake, on Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

Curt was born on September 29, 1921, in Dalton, the only son of Aluvia and Murray Humphrey.  He was a graduate of Portage High School, and graduated cum laude with a bachelor of business administration from the University of Wisconsin.  Curt served his country as a Captain in the United States Army during World War II.  He was the beloved husband of Eleanor Carroll Humphrey for 66 years. 

As a successful businessman in the Portage area for 32 years, Curt owned a chain of retail stores in Central Wisconsin.  He was president of the Portage Chamber of Commerce, Director of City Bank and Trust, a County Board Supervisor, Treasurer of the Town of Pacific for 24 years, on the University of Wisconsin Baraboo Advisory Board, plus serving on numerous community committees and boards.  Curt was a lifelong member of the Portage Country Club, the Portage Curling Club, and the Portage Rotary Club.  He was one of the original people who formed the Art Gallery at the Zona Gale Art Center.  Along with his wife, Eleanor, Curt visited and enjoyed travelling to a good portion of the world.  Curt also enjoyed sailing, golfing, and spending time with family.  

Curt is survived by his wife, Eleanor, Portage; his children, Nene Humphrey, Brooklyn, NY, Susan Carroll Lena, Providence, RI, and James Curtis Humphrey, Portage; his grandchildren, Jennifer Carroll Lena and Whitney Humphrey Henrique, other relatives and many friends.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 3, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Pardeeville with Fr. John Hedrick officiating.  Inurnment will be private.  Visitation will be held on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, at the church.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.            

The family would like to thank family and friends for their kindness and support, and Home Health United Hospice for the extraordinary care they provided for Curt and his family.    

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portage Center for the Arts.
