Roy W. Shields

PARDEEVILLE  /  COVINGTON, GA  --  Roy W. Shields, age 55, of Covington, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2010.

Roy was born on May 13, 1955 at Eglin AFB in Okaloosa, Florida, the son of James and Margarete (Föller) Shields.  He was a 1973 graduate of Pardeeville High School.  Roy was a Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1997 after serving 24 years.  Throughout his career, Roy served in England, Germany, Saudi Arabia and many Air Force bases throughout the United States, including Area 51 in Nevada.  He was in charge of closing Chanute AFB in 1993 in Rantoul, IL.  Roy was a veteran of the Gulf War.  Following his career with the Air Force, Roy continued his job as a Packing and Shipping Specialist as a civilian with the Air Force, Navy and, most recently, the Army.  He continued his education throughout his life, recently receiving his Associate’s Degree in Computer Science.  Roy loved mechanics, especially working on his beloved old truck and motorcycle, and spending time with his dog, Shorty.  He will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his willingness to help anyone in need.  His greatest pride was his family, having just visited Wisconsin for the birth of his grandson, Collin, on October 20.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Hanson) Shields, Covington, Georgia;  his first wife, Eunice Shields, East Bristol, WI;  his son, Roy Michael Shields, Beaver Dam, WI;  his daughter, Jaime (Doug Baerwolf) Pergande, Fall River, WI;  step-sons, Bill (Gin) Rue, California, and Joe Rue, Iowa;  his grandchildren, Colten Pergande, Cayden Pergande, and Collin Baerwolf, all of Fall River, WI, and Kenny Rue and Anthony Rue, both of California;  his mother, Margarete (Föller) Shields;  his mother-in-law, Darline Hanson;  his brothers and sisters, Gabriele (John) Fisher, Washington State, Ronald (Mikeala) Shields, Illinois, Raymond (Helen) Shields, Florida, Thairn (Brian) TeLindert, Portage, Robert Shields, Pardeeville, Rodney (Jessica) Shields, California, and Heidi Shields, Pardeeville;  many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, his father-in-law, Tony Hanson, and grandparents, James B. Shields, Edna Johnson, and Nikolaus and Christine Föller.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with the Rev. Alan Boeck officiating.  Military honors will be provided by Portage area veterans.  Inurnment will be private.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage.
