Albert W. Isberner

PORTAGE – Albert W. Isberner, age 80, of Portage, died on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Divine Savior Healthcare Hospital, in Portage.

Al was born on November 13, 1929, in Portage, the son of Albert W. and Eunice (Staudenmayer) Isberner.  He was united in marriage to Laura Lee Baer on March 20, 1954 in Frankfurt Am Main, Germany.  Al was educated in the Caledonia and Portage School System, and at the University of Wisconsin, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree.  He became a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering.  Al served his country as a Second and First Lt., attaining the rank of Captain in the United States Army Corps of Engineers.  His active service was in Frankfurt A/M, Germany from 1953 to 1955.  He then joined the research and development laboratories of the Portland Cement Association, as a research engineer.  His activities involved investigating the performance of Portland cement, singly, and in concrete, masonry mortars, and plaster, in addition to lecturing, society participation, and consulting related to masonry, plaster and concrete.  After 25 years he was promoted to Quality Assurance Manager.  Al entered private consulting practice in 1980.  Al was named a Fellow as a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials and the American Concrete Institute. He was also awarded the Walter Voss Award for distinguished contribution to knowledge in the field of building technology, and, in 2006, the J. Ivan Davison Memorial award for outstanding service to the Committee C12 since 1960.  Al was very active in the scouting programs both as a Cubmaster in Evanston, IL, and Riverside, CA, and as Scoutmaster in Evanston, IL, where he served as District Commissioner and earned the Path Finders Award.

Survivors include his sons, Jack (Corinne) Isberner, El Dorado Hills, CA, and Robert, Isberner, Redondo Beach, Ca; his grandchildren, Shannon Marie, and John William, El Dorado Hills, CA; his great-granddaughter, Sierra Renee Isberner, El Dorado Hills, CA; his sisters, Mary (Jack) Garvin, Rio, and Mildred (Mel) Knodle, Byron, IL, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.  Al was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Albert Isberner III, and two brothers, Otto and George Isberner. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 22, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Portage with Rev. Alan Boeck officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and on Monday, from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the church.
