Walter F. Zimmerman

PORTAGE  -- Walter F. Zimmerman, age 74, of Portage, died on Friday, May 22, 2009 at UW Hospital in Madison.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon, on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, with Rev. Alan Boeck and Rev. Jeffrey Teeple co-officiating.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the services.  Inurnment will be private.

Walter was born on July 14, 1934, in Portage, the son of Walter E. and Elna (Marquardt) Zimmerman.  On June 4, 1955 he married Phyllis McMillen.  Walter was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.  He lived in Lewiston Township his entire life.  He enjoyed farming and was Owner/Operator of his own truck for many years.  He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church holding various offices.  As a volunteer he worked with the Orphan Grain Train, and Meals on Wheels, as well as participating in a St. John’s group providing relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Walter is survived by his wife, Phyllis Zimmerman; his children, Kim (Richard) Schutz, Endeavor, Stuart (Jean) Zimmerman, Portage, Lynn (Matthew) Hauser, Kansasville, WI, Paul (Jennifer) Zimmerman, Portage; grandchildren, Jenyl (Erik) Nerenz, Baraboo, Lindsay (Brian Nerby) Schutz, Verona, Joshua Zimmerman and Carmen Kruse, both of  Baraboo, Michael Schutz, Endeavor, Joel Zimmerman, Seth Zimmerman, both of Portage, Jacob Hauser, Amanda Hauser, both of Kansasville, WI, Luke Zimmerman, Ethan Zimmerman, both of Portage; sisters, Rita (Melvin) Licht, Spring Green, WI, Elna (Gary) Gibbs, Williamston, MI, other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, John Zimmerman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Orphan Grain Train, or the Creation Museum, PO Box 510, Hebron, KY, 41048.
