Harold E. Gatzke


POYNETTE  --  Harold E. Gatzke, age 96, of the Township of Lowville, died on Sunday, March 8, 2009 in Madison.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, with the Rev. Marion Hendrickson officiating.  Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Poynette.  Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church.

Harold was born on December 1, 1912 in Elmhurst, New York, the son of Emil and Anna (Fleming) Gatzke.  He was baptized on December 15, 1912 in Elmhurst, New York, and was confirmed on March 28, 1926 in Morton Grove, Illinois.  Harold was married on April 27, 1935 to Evelyn Busse at Elk Grove, Illinois.  Harold was a vegetable farmer all of his life and enjoyed designing and building planting and harvesting equipment.  He had been a long-time active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Berlin, holding various offices in the church, community, and various farm organizations.  Harold was most recently a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arlington.

He is survived by three children, Jean (Bill) Mansour, Corvallis, Oregon, Kenneth Gatzke, Madison, and Donald (Faith) Gatzke, Green Valley, Arizona;  10 grandchildren;  23 great-grandchildren;  his sister, Evelyn Deeke, Bloomingdale, Illinois;  other near relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn on February 26, 2002, an infant daughter, Karen Gatzke, his brothers, Arthur, Herbert, and Ewald, and a sister in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, or St. John’s Lutheran Church in Berlin, WI.
