Dennis Carthew

PORTAGE  -- Dennis M. Carthew, age 65, of Portage, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, surrounded by his family, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison. 

Dennis was born on July 5, 1944, in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, the son of Fredrick and Elizabeth (Carlson) Carthew.  He graduated from UW-Platteville in 1966.  Dennis served his country in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969, earning two bronze stars in Vietnam.  He became a successful businessman owning and operating Midstate Design, and later developing Kestrel Ridge Golf Course in Columbus.  Dennis was an avid golfer and Packers fan, and enjoyed spending his free time vacationing at his home in Arizona.    

Dennis is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karen Carthew, Portage; two children, Adam (Renee) Carthew, Columbus, WI, and Katie (Shain) Lloyd, Dodgeville, WI; two grandsons, who were his pride and joy, Mason and Blake Carthew; six sisters, Chris (Greg) Murray, Monroe, WI, Kathy (Ron) Mootz, Cuba City, WI, Mary (Dean) Heller, Stockton, IL, Patricia Eberhardt, Saukville, WI, Carol (Bill) Vey, Waubeka, WI, Sheila Goedken, Dubuque, IA, and many nieces and nephews.  He will be deeply missed by many close friends, and two dogs, Lily and Lulu.  Dennis was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 25, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage, with Fr. Jim Murphy presiding.  Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery with Military Graveside Services by Portage area veterans.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass on Friday, September 25, 2009, at the church.

Dennis will be deeply missed.  His family would like to thank the staff at the Veterans Administration Hospital for all of their wonderful support and kindness.
