Mary L. Bartels

PORTAGE  --  Mary L. Bartels, age 81, of Portage, died on Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2009 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lewiston Township, with the Rev. William Grimm officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday at the church.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.

Mary was born on September 11, 1927 in Richland County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ivan and Francis (Fuller) Cooper.  She was married on June 28, 1968 to Bernard “Barney” Bartels, who preceded her in death.  Mary was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

She is survived by three children, Anita Pagel, Loganville, Connie (Dwayne) Campbell, Janesville, and Bill (Traci) Bartels, Portage;  her grandchildren, Rodney (Kathy), Mike (Diana), Margaret, Andy, Austin and Avery;  her brother, Ray (Mary Jo) Cooper, Alabama;  other near relatives and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Leo Hill and Barney Bartels, a son, Richard, a brother, Calvin, and a son-in-law, Leon Pagel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lewiston or the organization of  your choice.
