Norman R. Szoke

PORTAGE  --  Norman R. Szoke, age 81, of Portage, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2018, at Hamilton Park Place in Portage.

Norman was born on January 21, 1937, in Divernon, Illinois, the son of Charles and Eula (Helms) Szoke, Sr. He loved the great outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, long nature walks and even hand-fed peanuts to the neighborhood squirrels.  Norman had a passion for bird watching, the bald eagle being his favorite.  He loved motorcycle riding through the country and going to the local airport to watch planes fly in, chatting with friends and watching the radar.  Norman was a lifelong member of Dekorra Lutheran Church and donated to numerous charities.      

He is survived by his children, Teri Sopha, of Poynette and Chris Liston, of Portage; his grandchildren, Samantha Sopha, Stephanie Liston, Kelli Sopha and Amanda Liston; great-grandchildren, Gunner Sopha, Kaleb Liston and Jasmine Liston; his siblings, Ronald Szoke of Urbana, IL, Charles Szoke, Jr., of Montello, Karen Szoke, of Murfreesboro, TN, Carl Szoke and Bill Szoke both of Elgin, IL, other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Sharon Szoke-Howerton.

Memorial services will be private.

The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
