Helen Marie Phelps

PARDEEVILLE/PORTAGE – Helen Marie Phelps, age 99, of Pardeeville/Portage passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

Helen was born on February 26, 1919, in Portage, the daughter of Albert and Florence (Woodrow)      Sharman. She grew up in Portage and graduated from Portage High School Class of 1936. On December 5, 1937, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Phelps. Helen worked at the Portage Hosiery, Marachowsky’s Store and the National Tea Store. She was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry and Altar Society, VFW Auxiliary, Wauona Women’s Club, and she volunteered at Divine Savior Hospital, working in the gift shop. Helen served as a board member for the following: ARC of Columbia County, Columbia County Health and Human Services and Community Options Program.

She is survived by nephews, Jim (Linda) Hinickle and Robert (Mary) Hathaway; nieces, Elvera Phelps and Nancy (Bob) Pederson; very dear friend who is like a daughter, Carol (Roger) Colson; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ken; daughter, Barbara; sister, Florence; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.  

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Portage, Wisconsin, with Fr. Dave Mowers officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Portage, the ARC of Columbia County, or Northwoods, Inc.
