Ollie Mielke

Ollie Mielke, 86, of Portage/Poynette, passed away peacefully at Unity Point Health Meriter Hospital in Madison on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.

He was born in Dekorra Township on January 27, 1932, the eldest son of Bruno and Sarah (Richards) Mielke. He was united in marriage with Nancy Quinn on November 12, 1955, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. At that time, they moved to the family farm outside of Arlington, later moving to Poynette in 1958, where they resided for the next 57 years, and moved to Tivoli Assisted Living in 2015.

For 37 years, he was employed by the Columbia County Highway Department. After retirement, he continued working for 10 more years for Windsor Township. During this time, he also worked many Saturdays for Carl F. Statz & Sons in Waunakee. He was a 50-year member of the Poynette Masonic Lodge #173 F&AM and Portage Masonic Lodge serving as secretary/treasurer for many years, a 40-year member of the Madison Scottish Rite, a member of the Zor Shriners, and secretary/treasurer of the Vacationland Shrine Club for 10 years. He was also a member of the Poynette United Methodist Church, a former member of the Columbia County Board, a 20-year member of the Hillside Cemetery Board, and a 15-year member of the Poynette Village Board. A farmer at heart, he always enjoyed driving around the area to see the farm fields during planting and harvest time.

He is survived by his sons, Bob (Cathy) Mielke of Waunakee, Jim (Claudia) Mielke of Beaver Dam, grandsons; Andy Mielke of Milwaukee and Ryan Mielke (fiancé, Jenna Pitt) of Madison; brothers, Bill (Mary Jo) Mielke and Bernie Mielke, both of Poynette; sister-in-law, Barbara Mielke of Morrisonville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Mielke, seven weeks ago; his parents; and brother, Lee Mielke.

The family wishes to extend their sincere and heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful staff at Tivoli Assisted Living for their care, support and professionalism during the past three years. A special thank you to the Unity Point Health Meriter Hospital Staff on 8 Atrium during the past week.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Arlington Evangelical Cemetery, with Dan Pulsfus officiating.
