James L. Simonson

PORTAGE  --  James L. Simonson, age 86, of Portage died on Wednesday, September 03, 2014, at his home in Portage, with his family at his side.

James was born on January 30, 1928 in Portage, the son of Ervin Guy and Mary Ethel (Burton) Simonson. He married Barbara “Bobby” Bolgrin on May 16, 1952 at the Presbyterian Church in Portage. Jim served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy from 1945 until 1949. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lewiston;  with a special thanks to Rev. Grimm for his faithful visits.  Jim was also a member of the Portage VFW, the Portage Rod & Gun Club and the Portage Boat Club. A humble, proud man, beloved husband, cherished father and adored “Bompa”.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara “Bobby” Simonson of Portage;  his son, Tim James (Candy) Simonson, Strafford, MO; their daughter, Robin (Greg) Zastrow, Wauwatosa; six grandchildren, Rhianne Brie (Peter) Kamuchey, West Palm Beach, FL, Keisa Kirsten Zastrow (Marcus Laman), Minneapolis, MN, Rein Gregory Zastrow, Wauwatosa, Keali Kailyn (Marcel) Röhm, Fulda, Germany, Travis Simonson, Liberty, MO, and Trevor (Kerri) Simonson, Maryville, OH;  seven great-grandchildren;  Malaina  Rhyse Zastrow, Tanner, Trace, TyLandon Simonson, Kayla, Treston and Tokoda Simonson;  other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Donald Simonson and Lloyd Simonson, his sister, June Rebholz, his sisters-in-law, Edna Simonson and Shirley Simonson, and his brothers-in-law, Russell Pike and Russell Rebholz.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with the Rev. William Grimm presiding. Military honors will be provided by Portage Area Veteran’s Honor Guard. Inurnment will be at a later date in Welsh Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Saturday, September 6, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
