Elroy R. Gerner

PORTAGE  --  Elroy R. Gerner, age 87, formerly of Wausaukee passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Tivoli in Portage.  

Elroy was born on May 19, 1926 in Fond du Lac County, the son of Emil and Louisa (Freund) Gerner.  He graduated from Chilton High School in 1943 and after graduation he entered the service.  He served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII with the Naval Construction Battalion the “Seabees”.  Upon discharge from the United States Navy he worked for Bowe Manufacturing as a welder and then for Tecumseh in New Holstein, as an Assembly Foreman.  Elroy retired in 1986 to a cabin that he had built from the ground up, near Wausaukee.  He spent his days fishing, hunting and woodworking.  He especially loved his pets, both wild and domestic.  In his later years Elroy moved to Portage to be near family and enjoyed going to Bingo with his son and daughter-in-law.

Elroy is survived by his son, Bruce (Julie) Gerner of Portage and daughter, Beverly (Frank) Corrente of Rhode Island; his grandchildren, Anthony Gerner and his friend Lori, Amy Daun and her friend Lance, Tia Gerner, Tara (Andrew) Bandekow, Brittany (Paul) Jankowski, Nicholas Cominos, and Adam Corrente; his great-grandchildren, Bobbie Jo Daun, Brady Gerner, Gabriel Bandekow, and Tyler Spaight.  He is further survived by his stepchildren; Bryan (Kay) Preissner and their children Eric and Brad, Kim (Jay) Rodencal and her children Ashley and Haley; his brother, Don (Rose) Gerner; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Gerner, Stella Gerner, Connie Gerner and Bev Gerner, other relatives and friends. Elroy was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Barbara, his brothers, Robert, Corbin, Sylvester, Emmett, and Lester, and his sisters, Betty and Lou.

The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.  A memorial gathering is to be held at a later date.          

The family would like to thank Tara and Andy for providing him with a home and being his caretakers, the staff at Tivoli, and Dr. Amy Strain for the compassionate care she gave to Elroy.
