George M. Anacker

PORTAGE  --  George M. Anacker, age 86, of Portage, passed away Monday, December 22, 2014, at the William S. Middleton Veteran’s Hospital in Madison.

George was born on October 2, 1928 in Portage, the son of the late George W. and Agnes A. (Moran) Anacker. He was united in marriage to Ruth A. Bell on September 1, 1953. George was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather.  He took a great amount of pride in his family’s accomplishments.  As a life-long Portage resident, George dedicated much of his life to his work as a railroad engineer with Milwaukee Road and Soo Line Railroad. He greatly valued the life-long fraternal relationships he established with his railroad co-workers.  George enjoyed annual winter family vacations in Florida, and traveling to the Korean War Reunion to reunite with the men with whom he served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his children, Steven (Bonnie) Anacker of LaFarge, Michael (Zindy) Anacker, and Cathy O’Rourke all of Portage; sister-in-law, Sharon (Harril) Barber of Valparaiso, FL.  He is also survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, infant son, Mark Anacker; and his parents, George W. and Agnes A. Anacker, and his brother, Francis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Portage, with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl presiding. Inurnment will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Portage with the Portage Area Veteran’s Honor Guard conducting Military Honors. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church. The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Portage or Boy’s Town, 14100 Crawford St., Boys Town, NE 68010 www.boystown.org

The family would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Silverman, Pamela Hanson, APNP, both of the VA Hospital and Clinic, and the staff of Our House in Portage.
